GALATHEA by Edouard Vereycken (Belgian, 1893-1967)
This exquisite bronze figure of a nude female is quite dramatic with its sensual yet mysterious appearance. This Art Deco Era piece is believed to be titled Galathea after Galatée / Galatea the sea nymph in Greek mythology. The Belgium artist Edouard Vereycken was known for his superb work in bronze as well as his Monument to the Glory of the Belgian Infantry, a World War I Memorial in Brussels / Bruxelles.
Cast in the lost-wax process this stunning bronze sculpture is finished in a rich green and brown patina. It’s signed E. Vereycken and has the foundry mark Batardy Cire Perdue Bruxelles for the Batardy Foundry in Brussels and lost-wax (see photos). This piece is quite large and measures just under 29″ in height.
