Karel Appel
(Dutch 1921-2006)
Artist | Painter | Sculptor | Poet

Karel Appel was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet, and a founding member of the CoBrA avant-garde movement. Known for his bold colors, thick impasto, and raw, expressive style, Appel drew inspiration from children’s drawings, folk art, and primal forms. His energetic works often feature abstracted figures and faces that convey spontaneity and emotional intensity. Appel’s experimental approach and rejection of traditional aesthetics made him a major figure in postwar European art.
