This lovely painting of Galveston Beach by Robert Hamblen of Providence, Rhode Island, depicts the calm waters of the Texas Gulf coast. The artist captures the sky in shades of light orange and salmon colors filled with wispy clouds of gray. The horizon is filled with the deep hued tones of blues and greens of the Gulf Coast water. A small wave with its white sea foam cap approaches the smooth beach, covering the sand with a wet reflective surface.
You can almost hear this crashing wave as it washes up on to the beach. All of these details add to the realism of the painting and the artist ability and skill to capture the ever changing unspoiled setting. The Plein Air painting was commissioned by a Houstonian in the 1970’s. The artist traveled from his home in the Northeast to the Galveston Beach to paint this charming seascape.
Robert Hamblen was a self-taught artist, who painted American landscapes and seascapes. The artist describes his style as illuministic and in the tradition of the early Hudson River paintings of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. He insisted on preparing and working on-site, in the midst of nature itself and thus capturing the full realism of his subject.
Galveston Beach by Robert Hamblen is an original oil on board painting. The artist HAMBLEN signature is in the front lower right corner. On the reverse is a small typewritten note mounted to the top of the frame. It is a brief biography on the artist, his style of painting and mentions of galleries and private collections. The painting is mounted in a period ornate frame with a lightly antiqued two-tone gold finish.
