Titled Two Flags, this vintage lithograph by Jasper Johns features a pair of American flags, a recurring theme in Johns’s work. This large vintage lithograph on wove paper was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s original location, on West Eighth Street near Fifth Avenue in New York City.
This notable image with its bright colors, look as if it was actually painted and not printed. That speaks to the quality of the lithography, which is more impressive in person.
Two Flags is one of Jasper Johns most popular and enduring motifs, the American flag. It was originally published in 1979 with a limited edition of 5000 pieces. This series of lithographs were never signed by the artist or numbered. The publisher’s blind stamp and copyright mark are in the lower left corner.
