Ballerinas by Una Hanbury is a lovely cast bronze medallion featuring three ballet dancers in motion. The sculpture we believe is titled Intermission and is a large work, with the disk weighing almost 35 pounds. It was made to hang, but could also be displayed on a stand or substantial easel. The superb lost wax casting enhances the figures of the dancers and their movement. It has the original deep rich bronze patina with no signs of wear.
Una’s signature is on the lower front, as shown in the photos. It is marked 1/30, which is a very small edition, typical for the artist work. Along the lower edge, is the foundry mark and the copyright date of 1982.
Una Hanbury was a British born artist who’s best known for her bronze portrait sculptures. She was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1944 she moved to Washington D.C. to work for the British Embassy. In the 1960’s she resumed her artist career and had a solo exhibition at the Folger Shakespeare Library and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington in 1971. Later she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she resided until her death in 1990.
As a listed artist she can be found in several artist reference books, including Who’s Who in American Art. Her work can be found in corporate and private collections as well as museums and institutions. Permanent works are in the National Portrait Gallery, Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Institution.
