This amazing Rothschild Mirakal Hat neon sign is a rare find! Dating from the 1920’s-1930’s era, this impressive three color neon sign advertised the Mirakal Hat company. Known for their hand crafted Fedoras, the Mirakal Hat company promoted their Water Proof treatment for men’s hats and caps. It appears the company was based in the U.S. and at some point became known as the Wright Mirakal Hat company.
The sign is also marked Rothschild, for the famous Rothschild Department store in Chicago. Rothschild’s was well known in the Midwest for selling the finest clothing and home goods. Started by Maurice L. Rothschild, the department store opened on State Street in Chicago in the early 1900’s. The building still stands today and is an example of the Chicago School architecture.
This marvelous Mirakal Hat neon sign appears to be all original. It was most likely used indoors, which is why the painted can and white lettering are so well preserved. There is some paint loss to the Rothschild lettering on the top panel, as shown in the photos. Even more remarkable are the neon tubes, which also appear to be original to the sign. The three neon color combination works well together adding to its bright and impressive look. As an example of an antique neon sign, this is one of the finest we have ever had.
